TIME: Full Year 2019-2020
Thursdays 12:00pm-1:00pm CT
SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 3rd to 6th grade
Course Description:
Who wants to draw the US map? We will be doing a few things in this class.
First, I will read out loud from the book Minn of the Mississippi. This classic book is the story of a turtle as she travels all the way down the Mississippi river.
Second, we will work through the book “Draw the USA”, probably at about three pages per week. In this book the student will learn to draw a map of the United States, and (optionally) be challenged to draw the whole map from memory at the end of the year.
Last, we will share what we know about the different places we study on the US map. Did you read about it in a book? Your grandmother lives there? You visited it? Your favorite _____ was born there? Etc.
Homework will include drawing the map of the USA using the book. I would recommend 2-3 times per week, using a quick sketch approach. I also ask that parents help their children think of something to tell the class about the places we are drawing or reading about.
Required Resources:
- Draw the USA by Kristin J. Draeger (this book is non-consumable so only 1 copy per family)
- Standard typing paper (younger students might prefer larger 11×17 paper)
Optional Resource:
- Minn of the Mississippi by Holling C. Holling (I will read aloud in class & show the main picture but there are many small sketches that would be missed unless the child has their own copy.)
