Course Description:
This class will provide engaging content to help students advance their knowledge of American government. Students begin with a brief comparative study of governments then move into an in-depth study of American government on federal, state and local level. Students study the foundation and structure of our government with important primary documents including the Federalist Papers and the U.S. Constitution. Students will also cover political parties and interest groups, elections, campaigns, public policy and key Supreme Court cases.
There will be two hours or less of outside reading, watching videos and work per week to be prepared for weekly class discussion. Each student will be asked to give a presentation in class and one project. The students will be able to pick what project they want to do from a variety of ideas including making a game, a current event newscast, political cartoon, and music video.
Students should be prepared to spend the required amount of time for outside reading and work to benefit from this class.
Required Course Materials
Cobey will provide links to all materials. He will be using primary documents and current events/news. Many will be from 100 Milestones Documents, the National Archives, and Library of Congress. Documents will include the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and much more.
