COURSE DESCRIPTION
In this class, we will cover key eras of U.S. History post Civil War through modern times (post 9/11) using literature from a variety of authors. Literature brings History alive in a way a regular textbook falls short. When students can become immersed in history thru stories, history becomes real, living, exciting and most importantly memorable!
Each week, students will be assigned reading as well as a specific research task they will report on in class such as vocabulary and comprehension, historical facts, culture, and spiritual lessons learned. Students will be encouraged to use their unique gifts and talents to present their research to their classmates throughout the year. In this way, our class will be creating our own unique history textbook.
We will also be covering the history of ministry in the US. The first ministry we will cover will actually be using the Movie “Sheffey” (instead of a book) as we discuss circuit riding in the US. The students will end the year doing a report of their choice for the class, on a ministry begun in the US during the 20th or 21st century.
This class is designed for upper middle school and high school, ages 13 and up by Sept. 11 please. Much of our history is fraught with turmoil, so some topics we will be covering contain mature themes. For high school credit it is recommended (but optional according to your family’s needs) that 2-3 extra report/projects digging deeper into eras of history be completed. If needed, the instructor will give ideas and recommendations for these extra projects.
Required Resources: The books students will read should be available at your library or inexpensively, used. If parents wish to allow their students to listen to audio copies of the books, that is fine, however, students will need a printed copy of the book in order to complete assignments and participate in class time. The required books list is in process as the instructor reads this summer. Below are books used through Fall Break. First Semester books will be chosen by Aug. 6. The first half of second semester chosen by Sept. 10 and the rest of the books chosen by the end of fall break.
